The sister mode of Stand and Bang is the aptly titled Knockout Mode. While if for some reason you do want to just play the ground game, Submission Shootout is the mode for you.Ĭareer mode has you performing objectives, gaining fans, and fighting against your rivals 'Stand and Bang' is a mode all about striking, where one good punch or kick can knock out your opponent. Alternatively, you could just play the mode which totally removes the ground game from the equation. It's a shame, but the ground game can be avoided with skillful defense. Meanwhile, behind the view obscuring meters, the fighters are slowly and awkwardly rolling around on the floor. Unlike the striking game, this part is a lot less intuitive, and a lot of the time, escaping a hold comes comes down to luck. Pushing one way on the analog stick will attempt to transition to another position, while your opponent can defend it if they react quickly enough.Īctivating a submission move activates another minigame where you have to use the analog stick to fill a bar towards one of the four sides of the screen. You still have a weird analog stick minigame which means your attention is taken away from the action and to one side of the screen. The ground game hasn't improved much over either of UFC 3's predecessors. If your opponent is more about grappling and submissions, you'll probably be spending a frustrating amount of time on the floor of the octagon. The striking aspect of the game is second to none, but the ground game is harder to enjoyīut that's only if you're coming up another striker. It's about timing your strikes and stringing together combos to maximise damage, while preempting what your opponent will do and countering it. The control system can be sluggish at times as the fighters return to their starting positions after completing an animation.īut this does at least provide a good simulation of actual MMA fights, where the combatants aren't able to pull off ridiculous attack chains without losing balance. This aspect of the game is exciting and well put together. Taking severe blows will cause a knockdown, and unless you can recover quickly to block, your opponent will be able to mount you and rain down blows until the referee ends the fight prematurely. Taking a bad blow to the head is the most dangerous, as your vision will blur and your movements will become sluggish, giving your opponent the opportunity to finish the fight with just a few more strikes.
